T is for Thing

T is for Thing

Thing
Benn Grimm
First appearance: Fantastic Four #1  (November 1961)

Actual First appearance
Marvel Comic #1 October 1939

Team Affiliation Fantastic Four

I just knew that I had to include a member of the Fantastic Four in my A to Z super heroes.  There was no way that Human Torch was replacing hawkeye.  Reed Richards has the same power as Elongated Man, so it was between Sue Storm and Ben Grimm.

Wait! I'm kidding.  There was no way that I was excluding The Thing from this list.  I love Ben Grimm.  I love the Thing and there is no catch phrase better than It's Clobberin' Time.

S is for Spiderman

S is for Spiderman

Spider Man
Peter Parker
Amazing Fantasy # 15 (August 1962)

Team Affiliations: Avengers

If you ask me about my selection of my S Super hero and say?

What?!!?? No Superman!!!???!!!???

I would answer a question with a question and say

What?!!?? Are You Kidding!!!???!!!???

And match you puntuation for punctuation.

A teenage superhero who is responsible in part for the loss of the only father he really ever knew.

How awesome is that.  Actually it's more than awesome,  It's Spectacular.  It's Amazing.

Spider man  for me is the perfect combination of super powers and humanity.  I love the supporting cast, the villains and the tone.

Q is for Quicksilver

Superheroes A to Z
Q is for Quicksilver

First Appearance X-men #4  March 1964
Name: Pietro Maximoff
Abilities: Super Human Speed
Team Afiliations:  Brotherhood of Evil Mutants,  Avengers

As I told you earlier this month, I am trying not to have any one on this list have repeat powers.  This is why I did not put Flash in at F.  I actually prefer Flash to Quicksilver.  But that wasn't always the case.  Quicksilver is one of the members of my favorite era of Avengers.  This was the group that had Captain America, Hawkeye, Quicksilver and his sister Wanda.
I also like the redemptive idea of the character.  Originally a member of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants more from loyalty to his sister, than to villainy, Quicksilver got a second chance with the Avengers.   I know he has had his twist and turns since then,  but I will always side with the Quicksilver of my youth.

O is for Oracle

O is for Oracle

Oracle
Barbara Gordon
Formerly Known as Batgirl

First appearance: Detective Comics #359 January 1967
As Oracle Suicide Squad #23 1989

Team Afiliations as Oracle
Suicide Squad, Birds of Prey, Justice League

Barbara Gordon was added tot he television and comic book continuity of batman at the same time.  The daughter of Gotham City Police Commissioner Jim Gordon, The Librarian/Crimefighter was acultural pgenomenon in screen and in print.  The batgirl character was done away with almost literally in Batman: The Killing Joke as the Joker savagely shot her severing her spinal cord and leaving her a paraplegic.

Barbara Gordin raised herself from the rubble and became Oracle and put her librarian skills to good use becoming a hacker/researcher for crimefighters.  She has longstanding partnerships with Batman, Black Canary as part of Birds of Prey, The Suicides Squad and the Justice league.  Oracle is a power and intelligence broker and a symbol that heroes come in all shapes, sizes and situations.

N is for Namor

N is for Namor

Sub Mariner
Prince Namor of Atlantis
First appearance: Motion Picture Funnies Weekly April 1939  (Never Published)

Actual First appearance
Marvel Comic #1 October 1939

Notable Team Affiliations: Invaders, Defenders, Avengers

Sub Mariner started in the 1940's as a hero along side the original human torch and Captain America in the Golden Age of comics.  He disappeared for some time but came back  on the scene in a major way in Fantastic Four #4 (May 1962)

Since makings his splash back into the comics, Namor has been a complex character.  Hero? Villian? Monster? Mutant? The Atlantean Prince has been a fan favorite for generations.  I'll always love him for his role in bringing back Captain America in Avengers #4

M is for Martha

M is for Martha (Kent and Wayne)

Martha Kent
Adoptive Mother of Clark Kent AKA Superman
First Appearance Superman #1 Summer 1939

Martha Wayne
Mother of Bruce Wayne AKA Batman
First appearance Detective Comics #33
November 1939

My mother has something in common with the mother of Batman and the adoptive mother of Superman in they were all born in 1939.  Now when I say born about the fictional characters I am referring to their first time in print which is listed above.

Martha's Kent and Wayne both play an important role in the character of their super children one by her absence and the other by her presence.

L is for Lightning Lad

L is for Lightning Lad

Lightning Lad
Alias Garth Ranzz
First appearance: Adventure Comics 247  April 1958
7Team Affiliations: , Legion of Superheroes

Even though I said yesterday that there are other comic book heroes I like much more than Superman, I am a big fan of the Legion of Superheroes.  A teenage supergroup from the future.  Lighting Lad was one  of the original 3 members of the Legion.

K is for Kal-EL

K is for Kal-El

Superman
Alias Clark Kent
First appearance: Detective Comics #225  June 1938
Notable Team Affiliations: Justice League, Legion of Superheroes (as Superboy)
Notable Partnership Batman

I'll admit it when it comes to Comic books I like Spiderman a lot more than Superman.  That is why I had to get creative to get Superman listed under his Krypton name Kal-El to get him in the A to Z Challlenge.  S is reserved for certain webheads.

That being said,  June 1938 was a game changer in the world of comics.  If there was never a Superman there would have never been a Spiderman.

Alias John Jones
First appearance: Detective Comics #225  (November 1955)

Notable Team Affiliations: Justice League, Stormwatch

J'onn J'onzz AKA The Martian Manhunter has been around the DC universe for over 60 years.  An original member of the Justice League, J'onzz has long  been a fan favorite and a favorite of mine.

In his debut J'onnz, a native of Mars is transported to Earth and effectively stranded here.  So he takes on the guise of John Jones, a detective and fights crime on earth.

Meant To Be (Live)

Happy Anniversary to Amy, my wife of 18 years. Since we are big JJ Heller fans, I am putting her 12th anniversary song here.

I agree with the sentiment and am soglad that 18 years ago today, I had the good sense to marry my best friend.

I is for Iceman

I is for Iceman

Full Name: Bobby Drake
First appearance: X-Men #1 (September 1963)

Notable Team Affiliations: X-Men, Champions, Defenders, X-Factor

Ice Man was my favorite member of the original X-Men.  This may have been because Beast had not as of then turned blue.  It was mostly because I thought he (Iceman) had the coolest (no pun intended) power.  Stan Lee the creator of Ice-man has stated that Iceman was basically a cold version of the Human Torch.  This has always been absolutely fine with me.

H is for Hawkeye

H is for Hawkeye

Full Name: Clint Barton
First appearance: Tales of Suspense # 57
Joins Avengers in Avengers #16

Notable Team Affiliations: Avengers, Defenders  West Coast Avengers

If you were wondering why Green Arrow didn't grace these pages yesterday you can blame me, and I blame Hawkeye.  Hawkeye is one of my favorite superhero of all time,  second only to Captain America.  Hawkeye really does not have powers.  He is a master archer with a motor mouth.

Bronze Age Green Lantern Guy Gardner

Modern Age Green Lantern: Kyle Rahner

Modern Age Green lantern : Simon Baz
First Appearance New 52#1 and Green Lantern#0 (2012)

Notable Team Affiliations of various Green Lanterns:
All Star Squadron
Justice League
JLI
JSA
Green Lantern Corps

There are many other G super heroes that I would put here before Green Lantern

A few of them listed with their main  reason for exclusion in bold  are:

Green Arrow Duplicates Hawkeyes abilities
Goliath Upsets balance between Marvel and D.C.
Groot I've never read a comic book with Groot in it, only know him from movie.

I did come this close to replacing GL with Jim Gordon.  I'm glad I didn't.   In reviewing all the different characters who have been Green Lantern over the past 75 years it became apparent to me that there is  no other super hero quite like him.

F is for Fury

Superheroes A to Z

F is for Nick Fury

Name Nick Fury
First Appearance Sgt Fury and his Howling Commandos (May 1963)
Notable team affiliations: Howling Commandos , Shield

1st appearance as Agent of Shield Strange Tales # 135 (May 1965)

Nick Fury whether a howling commando or Agent of Shield is a man of action and courage.  I remember reading of his exploits in the 4th grade.  Even though he has no powers he is always willing to go toe to toe with any one,  Samuel L Jackson does the character proud with his interpretation of him in the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe)

E is for Elongated Man

Superheroes A to Z

E is for Elongated Man

Name Ralph Dibny
First Appearance Flash#112 1960
Notable team affiliations: Justice League

I promised that I would try not to repeat powers, so there will be no Plastic man , Mister Fantastic or Elastic Lad .  Each of these stretch superheroes has a different vibe.  I like Elongated man for his run in Detective Comics as the ductile detective.  He and his wife Sue solved crimes as they traveled throughout the world.

First appearance: Daredevil #1 April 1964

Daredevil is a complicated hero.  Blinded in an accident as a youth Matt Murdock has honed the rest of his senses and fights for justice in a way he can not as a lawyer,  I have always liked the complexity of DD.

C is for Captain America

Superheroes A to Z
C is for Captain America

Full Name: Steve Rogers
Captain America Comics #1 (1941)
Notable Team Affiliations: Avengers, Invaders SHIELD

Captain America will always be to me the quintessential hero.  Cap came on the scene during WW II and came back better than ever in the 1960's.  Marvel comiics was doing amazing work in the 60's, but in my mind bringing back the iconic hero was the best thing they did.  Captain America solidified the Avengers and became their best leader even though he wasn't a founding member.
